SPRING 2015 WRAP UP
After 12 rounds over the last four months, our club was proud to have three teams represent us in the grand finals. Our grand finalists were Open 1 Sandpipers, U17-4 Ravens and U15-1 Lorikeets.
First up on indoor court 2 was our Open 1 Sandpipers playing against top placed SthUpwey Stunners. After a 6-6 scoreline at the first break, Sth Upwey pulled ahead by a couple of goals. At half time the opposition led by 3 goals, and it wasn't looking too good for the Sandpipers. The Sandpipers started to claw back some of this lead. They slowed the game down, and up in the goal circle, Casey and Steph were converting goals, but SthUpwey maintained this lead until 3 quarter time. The Sandpipers came out in the last quarter, took control of the game, and were able to come out on top 27-24! Well done girls - a great win.

Over on Outdoor Court 2, the U17-4 Ravens were up against first placed SthUpwey Sapphires. Unfortunately, South Upwey got the lead early and were able to maintain this until the final buzzer. The score was 13-26. On indoor court 2 our U15-1 Lorikeets lost their grand final 15-26. Congratulations on getting as far as you did!
Winter 2015 WRAP UP
Congratulations to all our teams who made it into the Grand Finals. We had three teams who made it this far, and to top off a great Melbourne day, we also had three wins!! Well done to all. The teams playing (and won) were U13-5 Kookaburras, U23-2 Hawks and A Reserve Kestrels.
On outdoor court 16, first placed U13-5 Kookaburras were up against second placed Fairpark Herman, and there wasn't a lot separating these teams. Both teams were neck and neck, and at half time the scores were tied at 6 all. You could sense the tension on coach Julie and coach Bethany's faces, as they rallied the troops for the 3rd and final quarters. The Kookaburras did not let them down, snatching victory 12-10. A great win for the team, especially for those players playing in their first ever Grand Final. Photo Gallery can be found here.

Meanwhile [and I really mean meanwhile] on outdoor court 18 top placed U23-2 Hawks were up against runner's up Rowville Pearls, with only 3 competition points separating these teams. The Hawks were able to nudge ahead early, leading at half time by 5 goals. The girls then turned up the heat, and finished the game with a convincing win 46-33. Well done girls, and to coach Steve. Highlights can be found here.

Next on the indoor court 1 were our A Reserve Kestrels against South Upwey Storm. These teams had finished first and second respectively at the end of regular competition. During regular competition, the Kestrels had not defeated South Upwey Storm. When these teams met during the semi finals, South Upwey won by the narrowest of margins 50-51. After a good win against the Firetails in the semi finals, the Kestrels had something to prove. The Kestrels started by scoring the first few goals, leading at the first break 10-6. A quick interchange by coach Niki to mix up the mid-court, saw the Kestrels increase this lead to 9 by half time. During the last quarter, South Upwey was able to reduce our lead to 2 goals!, yes 2. The game was so fast and tense, that our photographer stopped taking photos and had to watch the game. However, with several turnovers and conversion into goals the Kestrels were victorious 50-46. A great game to watch and a well deserved win. Congratulations and well done! Photo gallery can be found here.
Meanwhile, our A Reserve Firetails won the MDNA Best Club Team! Congratulations girls! This team is made up of U17 players, and really rose to the challenge of playing in a higher grade made up of more experienced players and teams. They finished up 4th on the ladder at the end of regular competition. Well done! An extra round of applause. |

MEY WUN TURNS 25!!
Most clubs including ours regularly recognise players for 5 and 10 years of continuous service, however it rare to see a player recognised for 25 years of continuous service. This year, Wantirna South Netball Club has the pleasure of recognising Mey Wun Gao for 25 years of Continuous Service. Congratulations Mey Wun, and the club appreciates your loyalty and service. Over the years, Mey Wun has the distinction of being WSNC Club Champion twice, umpires for the club (along with her hubby), serves as a current member on our committee, and has had numerous premiers wins over the years, including one of her first when she played in U13-5 back in 1993! We have photos of Mey Wun from Winter 2015 season, as well as photos from yesteryear* as a tribute. *Yesteryear photos kindly provided by Peng. |
